Collection Carts: A Quick Neighbourly Reminder
🗑️ A Quick Neighbourly Reminder
We’ve had a lot of questions (and a few heated comments 😅) about garbage carts being left out & bylaw tickets. Here’s the scoop:
🕓 When should carts go out?
Collection carts should be placed at the curb the day of collection only, between:
4:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.
🕘 When do they need to come back in?
Carts must be returned to their storage area no later than 9:00 p.m. on collection day.
These rules help keep streets safe, clean… and way less attractive to bears & other wildlife.
🏠 Where should carts be stored?
When not at the curb for collection, carts must be kept in a wildlife-resistant enclosure.
That means a fully enclosed structure with walls, a roof, and a door strong enough to keep wildlife out - like a garage, shed, or another secure structure that animals can’t access.
Basically: if a bear can’t get in, you’re doing it right.
🐻 Living in a bear-prone area?
The District also offers bear-resistant cart latches to help keep your garbage secure:
• First latch is free
• Replacement latches are $60
Just reach out and we’ll get you set up.
These requirements are part of the District’s Good Neighbour Bylaw, which also covers things like property maintenance, noise restrictions, and keeping trash from overflowing or accumulating around containers.

Thanks for helping keep Hope clean, safe, and a little less of an “all-you-can-eat buffet” for bears.🐾
