♻️ Hope’s Recycling Reality Check

♻️ Hope’s Recycling Reality Check
Our latest Recycle BC audit found that 25.4% of the material placed in curbside recycling carts shouldn't have been there. That's one in every four items!

Some of the biggest problem items found in Hope's recycling stream were:
🚫 Durable plastic items (toys, storage bins, laundry baskets)
🚫 Clothing and textiles
🚫 Scrap metal
🚫 Broken glass
🚫 Bagged and unsortable materials

Why does this matter?
When non-recyclable items end up in curbside recycling:
• Entire loads can be rejected
• Sorting equipment can be damaged
• Workers face safety risks from sharp or hazardous materials
• Recycling becomes more expensive for everyone

A few simple steps can make a big difference:
Place recyclables loose in your cart (not in bags)
Keep clothing and textiles out of curbside recycling
Take scrap metal, electronics, batteries, and hazardous waste to the appropriate depot
Keep broken glass out of recycling carts
When in doubt, look it up before tossing it in the bin
Every correctly sorted item helps keep Hope's recycling program safe, efficient, and effective.

Need another option? The Hope Bottle Depot (517A Corbett Street) accepts beverage containers, end-of-life electronics, and small appliances.

And don't forget about annual local recycling & reuse opportunities, including:
🛍️ Trash 2 Treasure – June 13
📄 Shred It Day
🌎 Earth Day Recycling Event

Let's work together to reduce contamination and make sure more of what we recycle actually gets recycled. ♻️
