Fire prevention plays an important role in protecting lives, property, and the community. The Hope Fire Department works with residents, businesses, and property owners to help identify fire hazards, improve safety, and reduce the risk of fire-related incidents.
Fire Inspections
Fire inspections help ensure that buildings comply with the BC Fire Code and maintain safe conditions for occupants and emergency responders. Inspections may be conducted for commercial, industrial, institutional, and multi-family residential properties.
During an inspection, Fire Department staff may review:

Exit signage and exit routes

Building addresses and site access

Storage and housekeeping practices

Fire separations and fire protection systems
Property owners and occupants are encouraged to address identified deficiencies promptly to help maintain a safe environment for everyone.
Fire Safety Plans
Many businesses and multi-family buildings are required to maintain a Fire Safety Plan. These plans help occupants understand what to do in the event of an emergency and provide firefighters with important information about the building.
Fire Safety Plans should be reviewed regularly and updated whenever building operations, occupancy, or layouts change.
Fire Prevention Tips
Simple fire prevention measures can significantly reduce the risk of fire:

Install and regularly test smoke alarms.

Develop and practice a home fire escape plan.

Keep exits and hallways clear of obstructions.

Maintain fire extinguishers according to manufacturer recommendations.

Use electrical equipment safely and avoid overloading outlets.

Store combustible materials properly and away from ignition sources.

Never leave cooking unattended.
Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Working smoke alarms save lives. Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of a home and outside sleeping areas. Batteries should be tested regularly and replaced as needed.
Carbon monoxide alarms should be installed in accordance with manufacturer instructions and applicable regulations, particularly in homes with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages.
FireSafe Smoke Alarm Program
The Hope Fire Department participates in the FireSafe: Ignite Awareness, Extinguish Fires program, which helps ensure residents have access to working smoke alarms and important fire safety information.
Firefighters may conduct free home safety assessments and provide a complimentary 10-year lithium battery smoke alarm where needed. The program is intended for single-family homes and mobile homes that do not have working smoke alarms or have alarms that are expired, damaged, or no longer functioning properly.
